Ahoy, hearties! Do your kiddos love playing pirates as much as we do? (You’re never too old!) If they do, this is the perfect craft to get your enemies to walk the plank — a newspaper sword!
You can create your own sword at home with a few supplies you might already have on hand.
What you need:
- A few pieces of newspaper
- Cardboard
- Scissors
- Coloring materials
- Tape
What you do:
Start by tightly rolling the newspaper into a long tube. I like to use 2-3 big sheets and roll corner to corner for the longest sword. Use a small piece of tape to secure it.
Fold up the lower third or so of your sword to form a loop. This will be the handle. Use one or two pieces of tape to secure the end to the blade portion.
Cut a roundish shape from the cardboard, large enough to cover the top of your hand while you hold the handle (about three inches wide). This will be the guard of your sword. Cut a rectangle from your cardboard, about 2 inches by 4 inches. Decorate both pieces, then cut a hole in the middle of the guard.
Slide the guard down the blade of your sword. Wrap the rectangle around the blade, just above the guard, and tape it in place. This will hold the guard in place as well.
Your sword is now complete and ready for seafaring adventures!
