Sad People Music

It’s getting colder, the leaves are falling, the days are getting shorter.
That’s right kids, it’s sad people music season.
Sad people music is a mood. A vibe. It’s songs for when you want to feel your feelings. Wallow in bed and be miserable for a little while. Let someone else perfectly describe the angst of existing as a sentient creature on a rock hurtling through space. There is a kind of joy in knowing that other people have felt like us, have worried like us, have cried like us.

Let’s start with a standard for everyone who’s ever felt haunted.

My Immortal – Evanescence

When you don’t know how to say goodbye to someone.

Goodbye to You – Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals

When you get to the end of a relationship and you wish it had never happened.

The Night We Met – Lord Huron

The existential crisis song for all of us, not just Barbie.

What Was I Made For – Billie Eilish

When the one person you want in all the world won’t come back and you’re the reason why.

A House in Nebraska – Ethel Cain

Life didn’t turn out how you wanted it to and it’s time to face it.

Fast Car – Tracy Chapman

You’ve imagined something beautiful, but it isn’t real.

ceilings – Lizzy McAlpine

So, go forth my sadlings, grab your tea and a cozy blankie and revel in the beauty and ennui of fall.

And let me know your fave grey day songs and maybe I’ll feature them in part two!  Because I have barely scratched the surface of sad people songs.
