Kanopy Horror Classics

What’s your favorite scary movie? Personally, mine is John Carpenter’s “The Fog.” If you are looking for something spooky, ghoulish, ghastly, horrible, AND FREE – then we’ve got you!

Hosting your own scary movie night is fiendishly easy with your library card and Kanopy! Below is just a small sample of the movies you’ll find on Kanopy. Pop the popcorn and get your bucket of candy ready for a perfect movie night!

Nosferatu” 1922

If this one sounds familiar then you’ve probably seen the trailer for the new Nosferatu coming out this December. But a century before we had the original silent film of the same name! Loosely based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula Nosferatu follows the Vampire, Count Orlok, as he tries to purchase a new house while also stealing his real estate agent’s wife.

Night of the Living Dead” 1968

Is it even Halloween if you aren’t being chased by George Romero ghouls? “Night of the Living Dead” is often credited as the first zombie movie! A ragtag group of folks barricade themselves in an old farmhouse to remain safe from a horde of flesh-eating reanimated corpses that are wreaking havoc on the Northeast of the United States.

Vincent Price

Lastly, Missouri’s own Vincent Price has several movies on Kanopy. Vincent Price is the king of campy horror movies and there are several available to stream including “The Bat” from 1959 whose tagline is “When it flies … someone dies!” What’s not to love? But my personal favorite is another movie from 1959 – “House on a Haunted Hill”

This movie was directed by William Castle who often employed gimmicks in the theater. For this one, it was called “Emergo.” When “House on a Haunted Hill” premiered a skeleton was rigged to fly over the audience’s heads during a particularly spooky reveal!
