DIY Swiftie Scrunchies and Headbands

In 2008, in the basement AV room of the public library, my dad handed me a couple CDs he thought I might like: Paramore’s Riot and Taylor Swift’s Fearless. It’s been 16 years, and I love my public library (and Taylor Swift) more than ever. If you, like me, have never been able to go to one of her shows and you, like me, wish her merch was a bit more accessible ($75 for a t-shirt, Taylor?), we hope you’ll enjoy making these Taylor-themed scrunchies and headbands!

Headband

Supplies

  • Headband at least 1 in. wide
  • Fabric scissors
  • Cotton fabric 24in. x 2 in.
  • Hot glue gun

Instructions

  • Cut a strip of fabric 24 in. x 2 in.
  • Tie fabric in a knot around the headband and adjust so the knot is in the middle.

  • Hot glue fabric ends to the outside of the headband.
  • Then hot glue the inside of the headband and wrap the fabric around the headband. Repeat so that the fabric completely wraps around the headband.
  • Wait to cool and then wear it!

Scrunchies

Supplies

  • Fabric scissors
  • Cotton fabric 24 in. x 3-4 in.
  • Fabric pens
  • Elastic 1 in. measured 2 in. past your wrist
  • Hot glue gun

Instructions

  • Cut a strip of fabric 24 in. x 3-4 in.
  • Using a fabric pen write your favorite Taylor lyric on the fabric. I went with “Who’s afraid of little old me? You should be.”
  • Hot glue the edges together creating a tube. If your edges are rough or frayed you can hot glue them first by adding a line of glue close to the edge and folding it over.

  • Put the elastic in the fabric tube. It can be helpful to attach this to a pen to make sure it goes all the way through the tube.
  • Scrunch the fabric so that the ends of the elastic are exposed. Then tie a secure knot.
  • Then add hot glue to the edges of the fabric tube to close the loop and cover the knot.
  • Wait to cool and then wear it!

Bonus!

If you are a short hair Swiftie you can repeat the first three steps of the scrunchie. Then instead of pushing the elastic through put a headband through the fabric tube. Hot glue one end of the tube to the headband. Once it is secure, scrunch the fabric up and then hot glue the other end of the tube to the headband.

Wait to cool and then wear it!
