Since they were babies, my husband made Christmas ornaments significant for that year for our children out of polymer clay. I was always fascinated with the details of the ornaments, but found that clay hard to work with. That changed when I attended a workshop held by one of my colleagues on creating tiles with Sculpey clay — a polymer clay that is more pliable and easy to work with. There were examples shown of using the clay tiles to make boxes, picture frames and other decorative items.
I came home and immediately ordered everything needed to make clay tile picture frames for my extended family as Christmas gifts. To this date, not one has been made. Still feeling motivated, we decided to offer the project through our library’s Crafternoon project. Then COVID-19 happened, and we temporarily canceled our Crafternoon programs. But don’t fear, we have created a DIY Crafternoon kit for adults that teaches the art of polymer clay tile making.
Beginning on August 17, we will have a limited number of kits available for adults on a first come, first serve basis. Just stop by the reference desk on the second floor of Columbia Public Library and grab a bag of fun. These kits will also be available at our Callaway, Fulton and Holts Summit libraries. And if you happen to make a few too many tiles, I could use a few for Christmas gifts.
If you find yourself loving this project, and want to expand your polymer clay skill, you might want to check out our list of books on polymer clay. And don’t forget about the library’s free database Creativebug which has thousands of videos on other fun craft projects.
